Southern California Wine Regions

California is said to be the producer of 90% of all the wines produced in the United States. Some of the famous vineyards here are the Sonoma and Napa in the Northern California. However, these vineyards are not the only places where quality wines are produced. In fact, the wines produced in the Southern California are just as good as the wines of the Northern California.

Usually the wines in California are manufactured in two locations: the wineries close to San Diego and the wineries close to Santa Barbara.

Both these regions have actively contributed to the wine industry in California. The Californian wine industry produces and ships more than four hundred and fifty million gallons of wine, each year, to the United States and the rest of the world.

Santa Barbara

Breezes and fog are necessary for growing first-class wines and varietals. Santa Barbara is a place where you will find plenty of breezes and fog. In fact, it is a perfect place to grow wines and this is the reason why Santa Barbara is a good place for wine growing and making.

All through the growing season, Santa Barbara has moderate temperatures. The days are warm and the nights are cool. In addition, the surrounding in this location is perfect to produce grapes that have optimal acid levels and sugar levels.

The area of about fifty miles between Rincon and Point Conception is the longest east-west arrow from Alaska down to Cape Horn. This is the region where you will find vines growing everywhere, be it on rolling valleys or on the wind-swept hillsides. The temperature during the summer months in this region is about thirty-eight degree.

The climate in this region supports the working of the vineyards all through the year. New planting is carried out during spring, canopy management is carried out during the summer, harvest is done during the fall and pruning and weeding is carried out during the winter season.

You will find Syrah, Sangiovese, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay here. The micro-climates in this region allow the growth of a wide variety of vines. About a quarter of a century back, there were no vineyards in Santa Barbara but at present, this business is considered to be a hundred million dollars business in this county.

Temecula

It was during the year 1971 when the earliest Temecula wines were manufactured. The Temecula plateau is 1,400-foot long and it is located between the highest points of the Coastal Mountain range.

The micro-climate in this area is unique and the smog is kept away by the cool afternoon breeze. The huge underground aquifers irrigate the vineyards of Temecula. You will find different kinds of vines here, like the Italian Nebbiolo, Cabernet, Grenache, Syrah, white Rhône, Chardonnay, etc. These vines are harvested in the month of November and the grapes produced are fresh and sweet.

Winemaking in Southern California can be traced back to more than two centuries ago when the first vintages were manufactured by the padres of Mission San Juan Capistrano. At present, the wine business in the Southern California is better than ever!
